Find new people to follow

In part four of Twitter Tools Unleashed I’m going to discuss Twollo. Twollo which can be found at Twollo.com is a basic but powerful tool. Twollo allows you to set up searches based on your interests. All you have to do is enter your Twitter account and password to gain access to the Twollo website.

If you’re hesitant about including your password Twollo is trialing a version that you don’t have to enter your password. Simply follow @twollo

You can choose to follow from 10 Twitterers discussing a subject up to 500 Twitterers. An example of a topic or interest Twollo will identify is Anthony Robbins. Twollo will follow discussions on Anthony and Robbins, where as a quote around the text (”Anthony Robbins“) searches the specific keyword Anthony Robbins.

Twollo also has a Stop Following feature that you can use to Stop Following individuals who you decide to no longer follow.

The final feature allows you to remove your details from Twollo and no more auto-follows will be made to your Twitter account.

Currently the two most useful Twitter Tools that I use are TweetDeck and TweetManager which can be found at tweetdeck.com and tweetmanager.com respectively.

In part three of Twitter Tools Unleashed I’m going to discuss TweetLater. TweetLater.com is a group of “Productivity Tools For Busy Tweeple“ as stated on it’s website. TweetLater joins the pack of Twitter Tools that allows users to take advantage of some features found in other Twitter Tools plus more.

When you add your Twitter account TweetLater allows you to set up an Auto Welcome message which is similar to the Auto Reply feature found in TweetManager. This Auto Welcome message is sent as a direct message to the individual who is following you. TweetLater recommends to send a pleasant welcome message and thanks for following you. It should not be sent as a ”buy my stuff“ message as it is really a turn off to people just getting to know you.

You can set up Auto Follow to automatically follow users who follow you. Another TweetLater feature allows you to Auto Unfollow users that choose to un-follow you. After you set this up TweetLater will look to see if anyone has chosen to un-follow you up to 10 users at a time.

There is a feature to Manually Vet New Followers. This feature allows you to approve or disapprove of new follows. If this feature is not enabled the Auto Follow and Auto Welcome features will process automatically as new Followers join you.

TweetLater has a digest feature that will send you an email with a list of up to 100 new replies received on your Twitter account. If you find yourself too busy to read your twitter replies, this feature condenses them into a digest email.

You can configure the interval that the digest will be mailed to you. In addition you can set up keywords that TweetLater will track in the public Twitter stream. This feature allows you to see what is on the mind of Twitter users based on your search criteria. It also includes a digest sent to your email address.

One of the main features of TweetLater allows you to set up tweets to be posted at a later time. This allows your followers to get tweets through out the day rather than all at once. It also allows you to schedule tweets for international followers who may be sleeping while you’re posting your tweets during the daytime.

The final feature of TweetLater is a very unique feature in that it let’s you create an RSS Feed with either direct tweets or scheduled tweets. Your published tweets don’t go to Twitter they go to your own personal tweet stream, which is available in RSS, XML and Javascript formats. This allows you to include the stream on your Blog or other web 2.0 site.

Currently the only feature I am using now is the un-follow feature as I’m using similar features with other Twitter Tools. I’m looking to the future when I will creating my own tweet stream.

In part two of Twitter Tools Unleashed I’m going to discuss TweetManager, which can be found at http://tweetmanager.com. TweetManager – “Makes Your Life Simple. Twitter Style”. The TweetManager site has several features that I have found to be useful. To sign up for the TweetManager service you use your twitter ID and password, plus your email address.

Once inside the TweetManager website you have the ability to set-up the following features; Auto Follow, Send Message to Followers, Auto Reply, Auto Post, Tweet RSS Feeds, and Set up a secondary Twitter account to use with TweetManager.

Let’s look at the Auto Follow feature. Auto Follow allows you to send either a direct or an @reply message to Twitter users who choose to follow you. This allows you to build your list of Twitter Followers automatically, there by saving you time and energy in building your list of Twitter Followers.

Another feature of the Auto Follow is the ability to Auto Follow Tweets based on specific keywords. You can add up to 5 keywords that TweetManager will look for in Tweets and automatically follow those individuals. So if I’m interested in communicating with someone who is mentions “network marketing” or “New York Yankees”. TweetManager would automatically follow those Twitterers (Twitter users) and add them to the list of people I’m following.

The next feature “Mass Message” allows you to send a message of up to 1000 followers. All you have to do is enter your Tweet into the text box and push the Send message button in TweetManager (NOTE: Twitter only allows 1000 direct messages per day. You will not be able to send a direct message for 24 hours after you reach the 1000 limit.)

TweetManager’s next feature is useful when you will be away from your computer or other device that can send Twitter updates. This feature is called Auto Reply. Enabling this feature allows you to send a tweet to users that send you an @reply message. This would be good if your away from the office for the day, on vacation, out on sick time or any other time away that you won’t be responding to Twitter messages.

If you and your Twitter followers are part of a group or team that does things according to a schedule you can send out tweets via the Auto Post feature. The Auto Post feature in TweetManager allows you to schedule tweets. For example you and your team are working on a daily schedule. You might set tweets for Vitamin Reminder, Excercise Time, Meditation Time, Lunch, Breaks, Dinner, Conference reminders, etc. You have the ability to set 5 Auto Posts with this TweetManager feature.

If you have a Blog or other source of an RSS Feed you can add your RSS Feed and TweetManager will tweet your RSS articles automatically to your followers.

The last two features of TweetManager allow you to change your password on your TweetManager account in the event that you change the password of your Twitter account. The last feature allows you to manage a second Twitter account with TweetManager.

I am currently using TweetManager to assist me in identifying Twitter users who have common interests as I do. Also I’m using the Auto Follow feature to allow me to following users who follow me. Soon I will be using the RSS Feed feature to update followers on update posted to my Blog.

This article is part one of a four part series on Twitter tools. If you haven’t heard already Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service. Twitter allows its users to send and receive 140 character messages called “tweets” to other users who have signed up to receive them. It is estimated as of Feb 2009 that Twitter has roughly 6 million users and approximately 55 million monthly visitors. This would put Twitter as the third largest social network behind Facebook and MySpace.

With such a large user base there are many 3rd party applications that utilize the Twitter API (Application Programming Interface) to create “productivity” tools for the Twitter user.

The first Twitter tool that I find very useful is called TweetDeck which can be found at www.tweetdeck.com. The TweetDeck program takes twitter feeds and places them into a window with 3 columns, All Friends, Replies, and Direct Messages. At the top of the window are several button to assist you in using the TweetDeck program.

TweetDeck allows you to be able to keep track of the Twitter updates that you send and receive and also the updates of the people you are following. TweetDeck also lets you perform group searches, topic searches and even pull the history of a Twitter users Tweets. All of these searches results will be placed into a separate column in your TweetDeck window.

TweetDeck allows you to customize your experience through the settings button. You have the ability to change the color of the application, the size of the columns, text colors, play notification sounds, among other settings.

I have been using TweetDeck and have been very happy with the over all design and ease of use. I especially like the ability to keep up to date on all of my Twitter tweets in one screen.
